Shirak International Airport, situated approximately 5 km from Gyumri, is the second-largest airport in Armenia, following Yerevan’s Zvartnots International Airport. Inaugurated in 1961, it plays a crucial role in the region’s air transportation network.

The airport underwent a significant overhaul in 2007, focusing on the runway, which was entirely asphalted, stretching 3,220 meters. This upgrade, made possible by “Armenia” International Airports” CJSC, included the installation of a new light-signal system (IDMAN) of Finnish production, ramp repairs, and the introduction of specialized ground handling equipment. The renovated runway can accommodate various aircraft, from Antonov An-124 to Airbus 380 and Boeing 747-400.

Operational Developments at Shirak International Airport

Throughout its history, Shirak Airport has served both as a civilian facility and an airbase for the Armenian Air Force, housing a maintenance and operations base with combat and training aircraft. Recognizing its importance, the General Department of Civil Aviation granted Shirak Airport the status of ICAO First Class Airport in 2007.

In 2021, the airport completed runway renovation works and unveiled a new Arrival hall. Positioned as the second international alternate airport in Armenia, Shirak International Airport maintains its terminals, passenger lounge, and runways meticulously, facilitating international flights throughout the year.

Pobeda, an ultra-low-cost subsidiary of Aeroflot, commenced flights between Sochi and Gyumri in 2023. Operating four times a week (Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, and Sunday), Pobeda’s service connects Sochi International Airport to Shirak International Airport, contributing to the airport’s regional connectivity and accessibility.
