Tehran Imam Khomeini International Airport is the primary international airport of Tehran, the capital city of Iran. It is located 30 kilometres southwest of Tehran. All international flights in Tehran, with the exception of Hajj charters, fly from this airport. All domestic flights use Mehrabad Airport. The airport ranks third in terms of total passenger traffic in Iran after Tehran Mehrabad Airport and Mashhad Airport. The airport is operated by the Iran Airports Company and is the primary operating base for Iran Air and Mahan Air.

IKA Airport is a hub for Iran Air and Mahan Air. 

Tehran Airport handled 8,825,646 passengers in 2018. IKA Airport is one of the busiest airports in the country. The airport serves as the main hub for Iranian carriers including Iran Air, Caspian Airlines, Mahan Air and Meraj Airlines. The carriers operate to destinations in the Middle East, North Africa, Europe, the CIS, the Indian Subcontinent and South East Asia. Imam Khomeini International is operated by Imam Khomeini Airport City Company, a state-owned entity under Iran’s Ministry of Roads and Urban Development.

Growth in 2024 for Imam Khomeini International Airport

As reported by IRNA, Saeed Chalindari, managing director of IKAC, announced significant growth in operations over the first eight months of the current Iranian year (March 20–November 21). During this period, over 5.73 million passengers were transported across 35,917 flights, marking an 8% increase in passengers and a 6.8% rise in passenger flights compared to last year.

Cargo flights also saw a substantial increase, with a 56.8% rise, while the weight of commercial cargo handled grew by 35%. Chalindari emphasized the progress of several infrastructure projects, including the resurfacing and renewal of the main runway (2,000 meters long and 60 meters wide), completion of the first phase of the Propulsion Hub, and the development of a central security building and amphitheater in the main administrative building. Additionally, airstrip signage was upgraded to international standards, and four telescopic boarding bridges were overhauled, along with the installation of four 35-passenger elevators.

Ongoing projects valued at 54 trillion rials ($108 million) are creating over 1,000 jobs daily. These developments aim to position IKAC as a prominent regional hub for passengers, cargo, and economic activity, supporting Iran’s broader aviation sector growth
