Philippines
The Leyte Industrial Development Estate (LIDE), a sprawling 425-hectare special economic zone established in 1978 through LOI 962, is situated in Isabel, Leyte, Philippines. Housing two major industries, namely the Philippine Associated Smelting & Refining Corp and the Philippine Phosphate Fertilizer Corp, LIDE plays a pivotal role in the region’s industrial landscape. Owned by the National Development Co. (NDC), LIDE is managed by the LIDE Management Corporation, entrusted with overseeing the estate’s operations.
In a significant move, the House of Representatives has approved a bill that transforms the Leyte Industrial Development Estate into a dynamic Leyte Ecological Industrial Zone (LEIZ). This new zone will encompass an industrial estate (IE), export processing zone (EPZ), and free trade zone, envisioning a future of sustainable economic growth.
Origins and Scope of Leyte Industrial Development Estate
Founded on November 23, 1979, under the guidance of Letter of Instruction (LOI) No. 962, the Leyte Industrial Development Estate emerges as a strategic amalgamation of economic and industrial plans for the Eastern Visayas region. With an expansive area spanning 402 hectares, LIDE provides an ideal setting for power-intensive industries, leveraging the indigenous power generated by the Tongonan Geothermal Plant.
A Vibrant Community Offering at Leyte Industrial Development Estate
Beyond its industrial significance, LIDE embraces the concept of community development. The estate caters to families and individuals, ensuring a holistic quality of life. Diverse on-site facilities contribute to this endeavor:
