Phnom Penh International Airport (IATA: PNH, ICAO: VDPP) stands as Cambodia’s primary international gateway and is the country’s busiest airport. Nestled in the Pou Senchey District, it is situated approximately 10 kilometers west of Phnom Penh, Cambodia’s capital city. This airport, the second-largest in Cambodia by area, plays a vital role in connecting the nation to global destinations.

Conveniently located around 10 km from the city center, the airport is easily accessible within a 30-minute to 1-hour drive, depending on the mode of transportation and traffic conditions.

Transportation Options at Phnom Penh International Airport

For travelers heading to the city, a variety of accredited transportation services are available. One affordable option is the city bus, with a fare of approximately USD 0.40. The bus network in Cambodia is evolving, offering an economical means to explore the city. Currently, there are three bus lines, and bus number 3 connects the airport to key city locations.

Phnom Penh International Airport boasts two terminal buildings—one for international and one for domestic operations. Recent developments include a new VIP service facility and additional aerobridges to enhance passenger experience. The airport’s design capacity is set at 5 million passengers annually, with the ability to handle large aircraft such as 747-400 and 777-300 ER.

Expansion Plans at Phnom Penh International Airport

Aiming to accommodate escalating passenger growth, a significant expansion project was initiated in 2014 with a USD 100 million investment. This project focuses on enlarging terminals, parking lots, and commercial areas, ultimately doubling the airport’s capacity to handle 5 million passengers per year.

The airport’s cargo terminal has experienced substantial growth, contributing to Cambodia’s economic development. The cargo warehouse charges are structured based on the type and duration of cargo storage.

New Techo International Airport

The first phase of the Techo International Airport (TIA) construction, estimated at $712 million, has surpassed the halfway mark as of June 30. Slated for completion in 2024, TIA aims to accommodate large aircraft such as Airbus A-340-300, A350-900, and long-range Boeing models. The facility is designed to welcome up to 15 million passengers annually and handle 175,000 tonnes of air cargo by 2024.

As Phnom Penh continues to experience economic growth, Phnom Penh International Airport plays a crucial role in connecting the city to 35 destinations through 36 scheduled airlines. The airport’s strategic expansions and the ongoing development of Techo International Airport underscore Cambodia’s commitment to enhancing air travel infrastructure and fostering economic prosperity.
