Wattay International Airport (Vientiane), situated a mere three kilometers from Vientiane’s center in Laos, serves as a pivotal hub for both international and domestic travel. Notable airlines such as Lao Airlines, AirAsia, China Eastern Airlines, China Southern Airlines, Thai Airways, Vietnam Airlines VietJet Air, and Air Busan operate regular flights from this strategic location.

Terminal Services and Upgrades at Wattay International Airport (Vientiane)

The airport’s terminal, a modern structure continually upgraded for enhanced traveler comfort, offers a range of essential services including shopping outlets, dining options, information centers, currency exchange facilities, ATMs, and various transportation connections. These amenities cater to the diverse needs of passengers traversing through the airport.

Cargo Handling Infrastructure and Capacities

While Wattay Airport boasts modern passenger services, its air cargo handling capabilities remain relatively modest but are steadily growing. As of 2019, the airport managed 2,000 kg of both international and domestic cargo, a figure expected to rise substantially to 6,000 kg by 2025. The sole cargo terminal, constructed between July 2010 and April 2011 and operational since June 2011, was designed by Azusa Sekkei Company from Japan and built by Lao-Japan Airport Terminal Building Service (L-JATS), with funding support from the Bank of Japan.

Ground Handling and Storage Facilities at Wattay International Airport (Vientiane)

L-JATS provides crucial ground handling services at the airport, including a 50-ton cargo storage capacity equipped with freezers, jewelry safes, and space for hazardous materials. Despite lacking X-ray machines, the airport ensures the secure storage and handling of diverse cargo types.

The airport’s overall storage capacity spans 4,306 m2 across three cargo terminals. One terminal, managed by Hung Huang Logistics Co., Ltd (HHL), specializes in international cargo operations, while the other two are dedicated to domestic cargo and managed by Lao Airlines and Lao Skyway respectively. These terminals offer specialized storage, handling, and inspection facilities tailored to specific cargo requirements.

Fuel Logistics and Apron Facilities

Fuel logistics at Wattay Airport are managed by the Lao State Fuel Company (LSFC), handling the transport of fuel from Thailand via specialized tankers. The airport’s apron features three tanks with capacities ranging from 600,000 to 750,000 liters, totaling 1,950,000 liters. This robust fuel infrastructure supports the uninterrupted operations of various aircraft operating in and out of the airport.
