Founded in 1901, Danang Port has a rich history of over 115 years, playing a vital role in the economic and social development of the region. It is currently the largest seaport in central Vietnam.

Situated in Da Nang Bay and covering an extensive area of 100km2, Danang Port boasts a well-connected transportation system, serving as a critical link in the logistics service chain of Central Vietnam. Additionally, it serves as the terminus of the East-West Economic Corridor, connecting Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam. It is also the primary gateway to the East Sea for the entire region.

Danang Port consists of the main port, Tien Sa Port, and its subsidiaries. It boasts nearly 1,200 meters of berths capable of accommodating cargo vessels up to 70,000 DWT, container ships up to 4,000 Teus, and passenger ships up to 170,000 GRT. The port is equipped with modern loading and unloading facilities as well as warehouses.

The channel from the pilot pick-up and drop-off area to the end of the turning basin of berth No. 3 of Tien Sa Port spans 6.8 kilometers, with a bottom width of 110 meters and an elevation of channel bottom at -11.0 meters (Chart system). A breakwater measuring 450 meters in length enhances its operational stability.

Capacity of Danang Port

The port can receive various types of cargo ships, including those ranging from 35,000 to 50,000 DWT, as well as specialized vessels such as RORO ships, container ships, large and medium-sized passenger ships, super-length, and super-weight cargo ships.

Currently, the port handles a capacity of 8 million tons per year, with expectations to increase to 12 million tons per year by 2023. The presence of a 450-meter breakwater allows ships to dock and operate throughout the year without being affected by waves and monsoons.

Danang Port offers a range of services, including cargo loading and unloading, warehousing, yard keeping, leasing, towage, ship assistance, water transportation, road transportation, petrol and oil supply, and means of transport repair.

Vietnam, with over 3,300 kilometers of coastline, plays a strategic role in international maritime trade, connecting the Pacific and Indian Oceans. Developing its maritime economy is a significant and well-considered strategy of the Vietnamese government.

Danang’s Transformation as Coastal Urban Hub

In light of Danang’s recognition as a Tier-1 city and the issuance of Resolution 43 by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam in 2019, outlining plans to transform Danang into a coastal city, an international coastal urban area, and the nucleus of the key economic region in Central Vietnam and the Central Highlands.

Located in the northeast of Danang, shielded by the Hai Van and Son Tra Mountains, Danang Port is minimally affected by wind and waves. It serves as a vital transportation hub and the endpoint of the East-West Economic Corridor. The port is continually developing its major berths to accommodate cargo vessels up to 70,000 DWT, container ships up to 4,000 Teus, and large passenger ships up to 170,000 GRT.

From 2015 to the present, Danang Port has focused on upgrading its infrastructure and investing in new equipment. It has expanded its hinterland into provinces via the East-West Economic Corridor, tapping into the potential of high-growth cargo in the future, particularly from large-scale factories. Furthermore, the port’s deep-water capabilities and status as the center of world cultural heritage sites in Central Vietnam have attracted numerous domestic and international cruise ships. This activity has significantly boosted the tourism industry in Danang and neighboring provinces.

Developing Danang Port Brand

In parallel with production and business investment, Danang Port has been building and developing its brand, considering it a valuable intangible asset and a crucial factor in winning the market. The Danang Port brand is gradually being established in the Vietnamese maritime industry and the region. Cargo throughput at Danang Port has steadily increased. In 2015, container cargo reached 258,000 TEUs, and in 2020, it is projected to exceed 530,000 TEUs, representing a growth rate of over 105%.

Today, leading ports worldwide prioritize container services, and the trend toward containerization of seaports is evident. Danang Port, quick to grasp this trend, has continuously invested in expanding its wharves, yards, and modernization to better accommodate container ships. The port has successfully completed the upgrade and expansion of Tien Sa Port with a total investment of nearly $100 million. It has also enhanced post-handling infrastructure, improved the management and operational system in line with ISO 9001-2000 standards, thereby enhancing service quality for customers. Currently, Danang Port is progressing with Phase 2 of the Tien Sa Port expansion project, with a total investment exceeding VND 1,000 billion.
