Sohar Port and Freezone, located in the Sultanate of Oman, is a thriving deep-sea port managed by the SOHAR Industrial Port Company (SIPC), a joint venture between the Port of Rotterdam and the Sultanate of Oman.

Strategically positioned between Dubai and Muscat, the port has rapidly established itself as a global trade and logistics hub. Since its inception in 2004, the port has witnessed exponential growth, with over 3,434 vessel calls in 2018 alone and a staggering weekly handling capacity of over one million metric tons of sea cargo. With investments exceeding US$26 billion and a central location on the trade routes between Asia and Europe, the port continues to be one of the world’s fastest-growing port and free zone developments.

Thriving Industrial Clusters at SOHAR Port

Initially built around three industrial clusters for metals, petrochemicals, and logistics, SOHAR has recently added a fourth cluster with the launch of the SOHAR Food Zone. This dedicated agro-bulk terminal integrates facilities for food manufacturing, packaging, and logistics, marking an important step in the port’s expansion. Today, SOHAR stands as Oman’s largest port and industrial complex, handling nearly 60 million tons of cargo annually. The port’s ambitious plans for expansion include the ongoing development of SOHAR Port South and SOHAR Freezone, both in their second phases, providing further opportunities for investors seeking to be part of this remarkable success story.

SOHAR Port Connectivity

SOHAR offers unparalleled access to the Gulf States’ rapidly diversifying economies, bypassing the congested Strait of Hormuz and minimizing transportation costs. The port’s extensive road network, well-connected airport, and future rail system ensure direct connectivity to all GCC countries. Equipped with deep-water jetties capable of accommodating the world’s largest ships, the port has partnered with leading global players, including Hutchison Ports Oman, Vale Oman, Oiltanking & Co Terminals, and C. Steinweg Oman, to operate its container, dry bulk, liquid, gas, and general cargo terminals.

Key agreements

In line with its commitment to nurturing local talent and enhancing In-Country Value (ICV), SOHAR Port and Freezone has signed three key agreements to bolster its marine services. These agreements focus on revolutionizing vessel tank cleaning services, enhancing bunker services, and introducing comprehensive medical services for seafarers. By fostering collaboration with local companies and providing skill development opportunities, SOHAR  aims to stimulate growth in the maritime sector and support Oman’s global operations.

The Port stands as a premier deep-sea port, strategically located at the crossroads of major shipping routes. With its unmatched growth, thriving industrial clusters, connectivity, and commitment to supporting local talent, SOHAR Port continues to attract investors and solidify its position as a global hub for trade and industrial excellence.
