Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, named after Indonesia’s first President Soekarno and Vice-President Mohammad Hatta, boasts a substantial infrastructure. With 150 check-in counters, 30 baggage carousels, and 42 gates, each sub-terminal offers 25 check-in counters, 5 baggage carousels, and 7 gates. Often referred to as Cengkareng, the airport’s IATA code, CGK, originates from the nearby subdistrict.

The recently inaugurated Jakarta Soekarno-Hatta International Airport Terminal 3 Ultimate, operational since 2016, features contemporary environmentally friendly architecture. The terminal is equipped with 206 check-in counters, 38 self-check-in, 12 bag drop counters, 59 aerobridges, duty-free shops, and restaurants. Terminal 3 has the capacity to serve 25 million international passengers annually, operating 10 gates for international flights and 18 for domestic flights.

Aviation and Cargo Handling at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport

Over 50 carriers serve the airport, including notable ones like Lion Air, Garuda Indonesia, and Citilink. Ground/cargo handlers such as Menzies Aviation, Garuda Indonesia, Unex Aviation, and PT. Cardig Aero Services Tbk (CAS Group) contribute to the efficient functioning of the airport.

To meet the growing demand for air cargo, Soekarno-Hatta International Airport is set to develop a new cargo village. Covering approximately 300,000 m², the cargo village aims to accommodate up to 1,500,000 tons of cargo annually. The development includes a Dedicated Apron, Integrated Cargo Terminal, ICT System, and Automated Cargo Handling Terminal System.

The airport currently provides extensive storage facilities, including a large cargo terminal with warehouses rented out to various handling companies. Additionally, an industrial business park within the airport compound, spanning 30 hectares, is dedicated to storage space. It comprises purpose-built warehouses and open land that could serve as temporary storage during humanitarian crises. Surrounding commercial warehouses further contribute to the airport’s storage capabilities.

Technological Advancements at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport

On January 3, 2024, the Directorate General of Immigration introduced 78 new autogate systems at Soekarno-Hatta Airport. Aimed at streamlining the immigration process for foreign visitors, these systems, equipped with Face Recognition technology and Border Control Management, are accessible to both Indonesian citizens and foreigners. The autogate systems are distributed across Terminals 2 and 3 for arrivals and departures.

Jakarta International Airport stands as a hub of connectivity with state-of-the-art facilities, a burgeoning cargo infrastructure, and continuous technological enhancements for a seamless traveler experience.
