Dhaka River Port is a major river port on the Buriganga River. It is located in Dhaka, the capital and largest city of Bangladesh. The port is located in the southern part of the city. In 2013, a container terminal opened 20 kilometres from the city to handle ocean-going ships. The port is managed by the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority.
Dhaka River Port is sometimes known as Sadarghat which means City Wharf. In the past, it was built as a place for landing of boats, launches and even ships coming to Dhaka from other locations. Large tonnage vessels can no longer use it because of shoaling up of the river-bed. Plus an overall downsizing of the capacity of the inland waterways.
The Port of Pangaon is an inland container terminal. It has a capacity to handle 116,000 twenty-foot equivalent units of cargo each year. It serves as a cargo port for the Dhaka Metropolitan Area. As of July 2017, it serves ships traveling between Dhaka and Chittagong, Dhaka and Mongla and Dhaka and Kolkata. Bangladesh has signed coastal shipping agreements with Thailand and China, which are planned to cover the Pangaon terminal.
Dhaka River Port: Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA)
The aim was to set up an authority for development, maintenance and control of inland water transport. Plus certain inland navigable waterways. The then East Pakistan Government on 31st October 1958 promulgated an ordinance called the East Pakistan Inland water Transport Authority Ordinance 1958. On November 4, 1958 the Government by an order constituted a three member Authority of East Pakistan Inland Water Transport Authority (EPIWTA). The BIWTA came in to existence on promulgation of the above ordinance 1958 as the successor of the former EPIWTA. An advisory committee have subsequently been constituted. This is to advise the authority in respect of all matters related to development, maintenance and operation of inland water transport. Plus the inland waterways in Bangladesh.
