April 16, 2024. PMI opened a $150 million plant in Batangas’ First Philippine Industrial Park, making it the Philippines’ largest investment in cigarette alternatives. This “smoke-free Philippines” commitment focuses on heated tobacco products like those used in IQOS and Bonds. These heat tobacco, reducing harmful chemicals by 95% compared to cigarettes, according to PMI. The factory creates jobs and utilizes $120 million in local tobacco, showcasing PMI’s faith in Filipino tobacco farmers.

Muscat, Oman (April 15, 2024): Minerals Development Oman (MDO), a leading Omani mining company, is expanding its downstream portfolio with plans for ferrosilicon and magnesium metal production. These projects aim to leverage existing infrastructure in SOHAR Freezone and utilize Oman’s mineral resources to create high-value exports.
The ferrosilicon project will repurpose Oman Mining Company’s (OMCO) copper smelting facilities, enhancing their commercial viability. Magnesium metal production is also being explored, with promising findings of dolomite and silica ores in Qurayat. These initiatives join MDO’s ongoing investments like Sohar Titanium, a titanium dioxide producer nearing completion in SOHAR Freezone.
